Location: Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire.

The Scunthorpe Community Diagnostics Centre is located in a central, easily accessible area of North Lincolnshire.

Opened: May 2025

The Scunthorpe Community Diagnostics Centre (CDC) represents a significant advancement in public health services by providing a more personalised experience for patients requiring diagnostic tests. Community Diagnostic Centres are a key NHS initiative aimed at improving access to essential health services by relocating diagnostic testing from hospitals to community-based sites. The creation of the Scunthorpe CDC is part of a broader effort to establish community-based diagnostic services across the region. This strategic shift helps reduce pressure on hospitals, increases capacity, and enables faster, more efficient diagnoses.

Our part in the project

A key feature of the Scunthorpe CDC’s design is the integration of our Hygidoor doorsets. Chosen for their durability and modern aesthetic, each doorset incorporates colour-coded frames, providing clear visual cues that guide patients and staff intuitively through the centre. By reducing uncertainty and helping people orient themselves quickly, this approach ensures smoother navigation and creates a more supportive, confidence-building environment.

Assisting patient wayfinding with coloured frames

By incorporating colour-coded frames on Hygidoor doorsets, the centre provides intuitive navigation cues that significantly enhance patients' ability to find their way easily and confidently throughout the facility. This strategic use of colour not only reduces confusion and anxiety but also creates a more personalised and reassuring experience for patients undergoing diagnostic tests.

Scunthorpe CDC's approach to wayfinding aligns with broader healthcare goals of improving patient experience and operational efficiency. The centre’s design fosters a calming environment that supports both patient comfort and clinical excellence. By guiding patients smoothly through different areas, the colour and design elements help streamline movement, reduce stress, and minimize delays, ultimately contributing to a more effective healthcare process.

Moreover, the centre’s focus on wayfinding through thoughtful design supports inclusivity and accessibility, ensuring that all community members, including visitors unfamiliar with the space, can navigate confidently. This reduces the burden on staff who might otherwise assist lost patients, allowing healthcare professionals to focus on delivering care. Overall, the Scunthorpe CDC’s use of colour-coded wayfinding demonstrates how design strategies can benefit healthcare facilities by enhancing navigation, improving patient satisfaction, and supporting efficient operations.

Project Outcome

Councillor Rob Waltham, Leader of North Lincolnshire Council, praised the centre’s impact: “This new health centre will have a massive impact on residents’ access to critical health services, further improving health and wellbeing for thousands of people.” He described the facility as a “tremendous achievement for Scunthorpe and a testament to the dedication and vision of the teams involved.” Regular updates are provided to stakeholders and the community regarding the centre's progress and activities, ensuring transparency and engagement.
