As we move into 2025, the healthcare interior design landscape is evolving, with trends reflecting both the challenges and opportunities of modern healthcare spaces. To gather perspectives, we recently asked architects: “What healthcare interior design trends do you see in 2025?”  The responses provided valuable insights on how the industry is moving to meet the needs of patients, staff, and stakeholders. You can either watch the presentation below or read the responses on this page.

1. Prioritising seamless hygiene

Across the board, respondents reemphasised the critical role of hygiene in healthcare interiors. Seamless surfaces, non-porous materials, and designs that eliminate dirt-trapping joints were highlighted. These approaches reduce infection risks and simplify cleaning—an essential consideration in all healthcare environments. The challenge for designers is to achieve these goals while maintaining aesthetic quality and functionality.

2. Biophilic design to enhance well-being

Healthcare providers continue to embrace biophilic design, with respondents predicting a rise in nature-inspired finishes, earthy tones, and calming environments. The benefits of these designs go beyond aesthetics, contributing to improved patient recovery times and reduced stress for staff. Whether through natural textures, colour palettes, or imagery, there is a growing opportunity to blend functionality with biophilic principles.

3. Durability and sustainability in harmony

Respondents highlighted a dual focus on durability and sustainability, calling for materials that can withstand the demands of busy healthcare settings while supporting environmental goals. Long-lasting materials that can be repaired or renewed help reduce waste and operational costs, balancing resilience with eco-consciousness.

4. The rise of integrated technology

With smart technologies becoming more prevalent, healthcare interiors are increasingly designed to accommodate monitoring, maintenance, and operational systems. Whether it’s smart tagging for asset tracking or automated compliance checks, respondents expect a greater integration of tech into everyday interiors. The challenge will be achieving this in ways that are intuitive and add genuine value without compromising the human-centred nature of healthcare spaces.

5. Designing for mental health care

A strong theme was the importance of specialised design for mental health facilities. Respondents pointed to the need for spaces that prioritise safety without sacrificing comfort, highlighting the importance of robust anti-ligature features and designs that create a calming atmosphere. These insights reflect a broader trend in the industry—recognising the unique requirements of mental health environments and the impact thoughtful design can have on care outcomes.
